A friend of mine died on March 19th,

I feel like this is going to be my new normal, and something I am going to have to get used to happening more often. Another friend died suddenly New Years Eve Day. As we get older, so do all the people in our lives, especially the ones older than us, sometimes they are our own age, like my friend.

Life happens. Death happens. It's what we do with the in-between that matters most... like the memories we make, the love we share, and the way we let other people know how much they matter to us.

He mattered very much to me. I will hold tightly to our in-between.

Before he died we talked about him coming back to visit me. I asked if he would come back as a dragonfly or a hummingbird, but he said that was too common and I might think it's him when it could be someone else. He wanted to be sure I knew it was him when he showed up. He knew how much I love all the colored birds in Upstate New York, something I don't see as much of in California, and said he would come back as a blue bird. I said, "not a blue jay, they are mean and not nearly as pretty." He laughed. And he reassured me it would be a pretty blue bird. I told him I looked forward to his visits.

The day after he died, I pulled up to a coffee shop, and a little blue bird landed on my mirror... I think you can appreciate how happy my heart was to see that.

I wanted to share this with you because I think we all hope for a visit from those who have died, or at the very least, a memory that takes us back in time... to our in-between.
