For our mothers

I am a mother
I had a mother
My sisters are all mothers
Many of my friends are mothers
And their kids are mothers
Some of us were raised by others
Who were not our mothers
But were more like a mother than our own mother
Some people we have turned to over the years
The ones who held us, supported us
And wiped away our tears
And they were our mothers
My sister who died years ago
Was truly the best mother I know
Some mothers are alive
Some died a long time ago
Some are at the end of their lives
And some are preparing to say goodbye
A mother’s job is day after day
One day a year is not enough to say
Thank you for being there
For me and for others
We wouldn’t be here
If it weren’t for our mothers
